Patty, have a great trip! I'm looking forward to your report and photos when you return.

LindaNZ, "kimburu" on this board has done self-drive in Namibia. I know Kavey who posts here has also done self-drive self-catering in Kruger. Try to find their reports. Searching should also yield the reports of many other budget-challenged safari-goers who have visited those destinations.

Congrats on the upcoming anniversary and birthday.

No-

the original poster did NOT say $200 per night for the safari portion -JUST the beach lodgings or other NON-safari acommodations.

She said she'd consider splurging for a luxury safari-though you can get awfully splurge-y so the Fodorites just need to gauge the level of splurginess.

Happy planning!

Thanks, Leely!

hdaum,
I don't see where the OP specified whether $200 was safari or non-safari and she said the splurge part could be safari or beach. Her exact words were:

Regarding budget - we're prepared to splash out for somewhere really special (ie one of those luxury safari places or a great beach resort) but otherwise would want to average not much more than US$200 per night for accommodation.

Lots of options from Southern to Eastern Africa and the various beach resorts in/around the Indian Ocean.

Question? Have you checked which airlines from NZ to which areas in Africa, the most direct route (though likely at least one connection), how often and prices to mainland Africa, i.e., Johannesburg or Nairobi or Dar-es-Salaam or Kilimanjaro.

Of course, prices can change depending where and time of year, but this might help get the ball rolling.

OR beach resort, I stand corrected... if they 'splashed out' on safari they might go a bit more budget on beach portion or vice versa-or maybe not even a beach or safari at all-cool.

Sorry for sticking my nose in-

To repeat napamatt, and I agree. Shelf drive Kruger. Can be done easily for $200 per night for a couple. A nice "hut" in a very nice Kruger camp is $70 per night for starters.

regards - tom
ps - and I/we will be doing exactly that at Kruger starting next Tuesday
