For what it's worth it is my observation that you have very negative attitude towards most of the opinions and personalities that participate on this forum. I thought that you had recently decided to withdraw and not participate in further postings? The majority of forum particpants seem to enjoy one anothers posts and the exchange of useful information, whether about travel, photography, or zip off pants. Politics and ones political or ideological views really have no business on forums such as this. Sniktawk, try and get with the program

Snithawk, sorry to offend. In my country we use slang terms like "idiot lights" to refer to the red warning lights on car dashboards instead of gauges, and "idiot mode" (at least among computer geeks I used to work with) to refer to any "Auto" one-button software solution. It doesn't mean you are an idiot for using such a function (I use the simplest way myself at times for convenience even though I'm an Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop).
My point was I'm sure Andy didn't get his subtle results with a simple 'convert to grayscale' command. As for B/W plug-ins, you don't really need those if you have Photoshop ... one easy way to convert to B/W is with the Channel Mixer with Monochrome checked. You can then mix the three channels in any proportion desired for the 99.9% of the times when a simple 59-30-11 conversion is not optimal. Or check John Paul Caponigro's writings for even more subtle ways to optimize the conversions.

Very few "beginners" would be using Photoshop CS ($300-$600). My guess is that most would have Photoshop Elements or one of the other basic products. All are capable of doing what Bill suggests, the names for the process in each program just differ.

Wow, Andy, congrats on landing that one!
Those images are incredible! I agree with Kavey, I'd love to have that Acacia & Fog on my wall - incredible.
And that whole Banana Republic ad that Carla posted the link to is incredible, the music, the presentation is great - it really works! (well, OK, it didn't make me want to buy BR clothes, but it DID make me want to go on safari again.)

Geez, really, some people need to learn some common courtesy. It's not what you say it's how you say it, though, that said, if you haven't anything nice to say, there are some occasions when it's best to say nowt at all.
Also, it's clear at a glance that those images weren't simply desaturated using the desat function. Their tonal range and their punchiness, for lack of a better word, are a world apart from the rather muddy black and whites produced by a straight forward desat. Working with the channel mixer, to pick one method, isn't an arcane secret or a black art but it is something that takes a lot of time and effort to perfect.
It's easy to fail to appreciate the skills and talents required to achieve excellence in other peoples' fields and assume you could do it just as well but quite another thing when you actually try it.

Great photos, Andy!!! I came across the images accidentally, when I went on the Banana Republic website to buy some khaki pants for my upcoming trip. I was blown away by the photos then, and I'm so excited to find out that they were done by our very own Andy!
Saying that you hope Banana Republic customers won't start going on safari is a little like saying that you hope Levis customers won't start going to dude ranches. It's a non-sequitur, made especially ironic in light of Banana Republic's origins as a purveyor of affordable safari gear.
Banana Republic is a great company, bringing inexpensive, well-designed clothes to the masses (including hoards of safari-goers), and now they are bringing gorgeous photographs to the masses, too. Well done, Andy!

Can anyone explain what all the complaints are about. I merely indicated a response to a question regarding B & W conversion, subsequent posts have indicated other methods, with which I would agree.
The comment about Bana Republic was as we say in England sarcasm, something which is evidently not necessarily understood by many. In the same way that I misunderstood the US usage of "idiots".
The comment about buying a game reserve was directed at Andy Biggs as he chose not to respond to the question regarding the recent purchase by Thomson Safaris in Tanzania.
As for the comments by Safarichuck all I can say is that he may not have read my positive comments to recent threads on Madikwe amongst many others.

Let's stop the thread here before James' very gracious comments about my recent BR deal turns into yet another political topic.
A ton of negativity these days on this forum, and I am going to hope that it doesn't continue this way. I enjoy contributing to the forum in the hope that I can help share some of my experiences from being in the industry, but as f late a few folks are making the forum a bit challenging for me to feel excited about helping out.
I am unconfortable asking that the topic stay on topic, because it has to do with me. But I am also confomfortable talking about the overall tone of the board these days.
Let's tone it down, folks.

What Andy, Tom (cary999), Kavey, and most of the other thread participants have said re: sniktawk. I find myself more reluctant to contribute lately due to his always negative and ubiquitous presence on this forum. I think sniktawks' behavior suggests a deeper set of psycological issues than I can deal with on this venue. Previously, I had decided NOT to participate in any thread in which he had posted and will continue that policy. Some of you might want to do the same. Once again I am so very proud of Andy for his recent achievements and greatful for all of the help on safari photographic technique a hudge congratulations and kudos. I'm off to go shopping at Banana Republic. We Yanks gotta dress right for safari; isn't that right sniktawk? ;-)

Re. Banana Republic, I’ve heard about them as a place to buy affordable clothes that’s good for safari, but at the website I doesn’t look like that’s the case. I’d walk into their shop to look at the pictures, but I wouldn’t buy anything – if I lived anywhere near a shop, which I don’t.
