Big kudos to Andy Biggs for the Banana Republic City Safari campaign for Summer 2008. His images are featured throughout - must be nice to be REALLY famous :)

Here is some more detail surrounding this Banana Republic deal.

Banana Republic has licensed 13 of my photographs to be used as backdrops for their summer 2008 catalog photo shoot, as well as for marketing materials, annual report, web site, billboards and just about anything else they need them for. They are also printing, framing and hanging these images by themselves in all 450 stores around the world. The images are now starting to show up in the stores, even though the official launch isn't until May 22.

you will notice my images as backdrops on their main web site. Also look for the link to their behind the scenes video.

I am revamping my web site at the moment to emphasize those images, as well as some of the color photographs that they did not select or use. This entire deal has made me realize that my print sales business could be better, so I will be emphasizing this functionality as much as I can. BR sent out 700,000 inserts in their most recent credit card statements, and this insert talked about the summer 2008 campaign, as well as my photographs. Talk about fantastic public relations!

I am very very pleased at the moment. It isn't very often that African wildlife photographers get much attention outside of the industry.

These are outstanding! Hope you don't mind me posting them. At least I can view them here without those hunky male models distracting me. :D

That's just 1/2 the story. Andy has really gone uptown and even has begun his own line of photography bags called "Gura Gear". I had the opportunity to use one of the prototype bags on my last safari and it is awesome. Andy seems to have designed the perfect bag for safari and for transport as carry on. I can now dispose of the other bags that fill my closets. James, I didn't realize the Ford agency handled Leopards, Lions, Eles, and Cheetah :-) Perhaps this Banana Republic campagin will make the public a bit more eco aware, it can only help.

Excellent photos, Andy. Did you originally shoot them in black and white, or did you digitize color photos? I, too, loved the acacias in the fog!

Thank you for all of the kind words! I have to say that I am very partial to that aerial shot over the Serengeti, as well. That image has be printed many times already.

Shaytay, I shoot all of my images with digital cameras (for the most part), so all of the images start off as color files. My brain tends to disregard color on some of my more recent safaris, and this is an exciting area for me. There is so much color around, and I have to figure out which images are best captured with color or black and white in mind. I typically do this before I even take the photograph.

Thanks, Andy. I've just started shooting digital, so I'm still learning that you can do things like this (color to B&W). I'll have to play with some of my images and see what they look like in B&W (nothing like yours, I'm sure!)

B&W processing isn't a formula, unfortunately. Converting from color files requires seeing tones rather than color. Can be unnatural at times, but playing around is the best way to learn.

If you have Adobe Photoshop CS then convertion to B & W is easy just click in image, adjustments, black & white. Hey presto!

IMHO, I do hpe that this does not encourage Banana Republic customers to go on safari.

I also hope they do not buy a game reserve.

This is the 'idiot mode' that simply combines 69% from the Green channel, 30 % from the Red channel, 11% from the Blue channel.

There are several other ways to convert to B/W that are much better than this, as Andy no doubt knows.

Andy, maybe BR customer is code for preppy,loud, obnoxious Americans who take the best seats in the vehicles, use more than their fair share of the worlds's resources and pollute the environment...or maybe's its just tongue in cheek ;)

I would not be as rude as to say it is the idiots way but I believed I was explaining it to a beginner in these matters, this method is sophisticated enough for most amateur users. These things are not some form of black magic art that are kept within a secret society there are many other methods should you choose. A search of the web will reveal many plug-ins that can be better than that used in Photoshop itself.
