Hi!

Apart from taking an expensive taxi, can anyone give me some suggestions on how to get to Petra from Amman?

I know there are buses from the Wahadat bus station, but how often (approx) do they run and how long does it take?

Also, are there service taxi's to petra, from Amman? If so, where do we get them and until how long do they run?

Are these safe for a woman to travel in (my wife).

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. You really don't want a bus, you need to hire and car and driver. Contact one of the travel agencies in Amman and they will be more than happy to do it. It should cost about $100.

Is it because it is unsafe? How about service taxi's?

no reason to avoid the bus. it cost me JD4 (approx USD 6) with luggage. there are official JETT buses (like a normal greyhound bus run for tourists only), but i didn't take it because they leave early in the morning. I just took a taxi to the bus station and asked the driver to find me the next bus. normal buses leave as soon as they fill up, so time is variable. mine left in 10 min. It was a minibus (seating for about 20 people). It was full - everyone had a seat. it was only locals. i was the only foreigner, but everyone was nice and respectful. as a single female, some people switched so i would sit next to another woman. no one bothered me. Bus had AC and it was a nice ride. check JETT - maybe more comfortable if you want to avoid the locals. you can also rent a car. road are great in jordan, well posted and drive to petra is straigh shot down one highway (once you are out of Amman).

While I'm sure the poster of this statement had good intentions, I really don't understand its value -- it begs the question as to why someone should not take a bus.

I am visiting Jordan next May, and I intend to take a bus from Amman, for $6 or so, instead of $100 for a private taxi.

I also took the bus (though this was 10 yrs ago), if i remember correctly the ride was like 3.5hrs to get there. It was a normal bus, not a "minibus", most of the passengers were backpackers and everyone had a seat. Don't know why someone wouldn't want to take the bus...
