this should be no problem. I was in a similar situation and my initial flight was delayed. However, everyone on my flight was accomodated rather easily and quickly on the next available flight. Flights from Jo'burg to Cape Town, I believe, run every hour.

If the first is an international, then 40 minutes is an illegal cxn, you are likely to miss the onward flight.
If both are domestic, check your bags through to the final destination and you shouldn't have a problem.

If the first flight is International and on time, then no way. I flew in from Singapore early Saturday morning, three flights arrived about the same time, and it was chaotic. Very different to my last Int. arrival last year. ONE customs agent at the Nothing to Declare line, that stretched all the way across the hall. He was collecting the customs forms, asking some of the people questions, and directing some to the other line for inspection. I don't know how many were on duty there, but I sure hope they get their act together before the 2010 Football World Cup!

Not a chance I also arrived from Singapore on Saturday, luggage takes 20-30 minutes customs lots of silly questions about the same.
I came back just before Christmas it was utter chaos with SAA internal flights the check in queue was at least 2 hours. This week it was fine.

you'll be lucky and forget about your bags making it!!

btw, the new SAA planes from the uSa are airbuses which use less fuel but go slower than the old boeings.

so they are less able to make up time lost if there are delays in Dakar or Ihla da Sol or wherever. . they are stopping over.

Hello,

I concur with the other posters -- if it's a domestic-domestic connection (say, CPT-JNB to JNB-MQP) it's possible, though only if everything works perfectly. If it's an international-domestic connection (say, SFO-JNB to JNB-CPT) it's impossible.

My general rule is allow at least two hours between flights, particularly if one of them is an international flight.

Cheers,
Julian

Went through Johannesberg 4 times last year. Once they lost our luggage and finally found it in the building 6 hours later. This was an international flight.

Coming from Livingstone to Johannesberg it took them 1 and 1/2 hours to offload our luggage on a domestic flight.

The entire luggage retrieval system is antiquated and furthermore there is NO ONE to talk to...you just keep getting passed along.
