best shoes

There is no "best". There is only what works on YOUR feet.
Merrill, Ecco, SAS, Joseph Seibel, Mephisto, Geox, Cole Haan/Nike Air, Naot, on and on.
My personal choice and the only shoes that really work for me for all day walking, I wear my regular running/gym shoes like New Balance or Nike Air.

If you really really want to know everything possible about
walking shoes, go to the Slowtrav site. On the 'everything
about travel' section there's a 12 page thread about walking
shoes. Beyond informative.

The best tip is to have 2-3 pair in any trip, so you don't have to wear the same ones all the time. AND buy them well in advance of the trip so you have plenty of time to wear them around and make sure they are OK. The walking you do when traveling is WAY more than a typical day at home (or at least it is for me).

What Suze said.
I just found the best shoes of my life, for me, for travel as I travel -- Naot sandals that got me through hours and hours of city and town walking as well as dinner out. Paul Green sporty black walking shoes are my closed toe shoe option.
Previously Paul Green sporty euro style walking shoes and SAS or Teva sandals have done the job for me.
Good luck with your search.
