Cell phones in Grenada?
We arrive in Grenada Friday night- yay! My husband just found out he will need to conduct some business while we're away, however. Our Sprint Blackberries would be 1.99/minute to make calls; any suggestions for rental cell phones that would be less expensive? Thank you!

Is he going to be making a lot of calls and will they be long in duration? Find out if your Blackberries are unlocked and what band/frequency they use. You can then purchase a local SIM card from either Digicel or Lime. I think the rate is around 95 cents/minute, I'm not quite positive.
If he plans to make a lot of calls for long durations, your best bet is to use Skype if you are traveling with a laptop. Don't forget to bring along a headset. The call quality is pretty good and it is something like 12 cents/minute.

Thanks for the suggestion, mymoosie! He's leaning toward renting a phone so that he can be a little more flexible. Do you (or anybody?) know if it would be better to find one before we go or wait until we get there?
I love your new hotel hopping report, btw! The pictures from Mopion are so funny- sounds like an adventure!

I'm not familiar with rental mobiles in Grenada or in the US. Where are you staying? Some smaller hotels will rent you a mobile phone for like $5/day. You might want to contact your hotel. It might also be less expensive to just purchase a local phone once you get to the island. Sometimes they have specials running for a basic phone. I'm going to the supermarket a little later today so I will drop by Digicel and do some scouting for you. I'll report back later on what they have to offer.

The least expensive phone that Digicel currently has is EC199 (roughly $74) + a SIM card which should be around $20 and includes some prepaid minutes. That may work out to be less expensive than a rental phone.

I just do not see how renting a phone will be cheaper than getting a cheap unlocked GSM phone and buying a local prepaid sim. Skype will obviously be cheaper, as already mentioned, but you will need access to Wifi. If your hotel has free Wifi, that will be the way to go.
