I've been looking at VRBO vacation rentals in Rome & Venice for next June and have narrowed down my choices, I hope to book them by next week. How does one go about getting vacation protection, when do I take it out, at the time of booking? Can I take a single protection to cover both rentals? Sorry if I appear ignorant, this is the first time I'm renting and I'm rather confused about the whole process. Thanks for your patience and suggestions!

I've never used VRBO, but if they themselves sell you some "vacation protection", they should tell you the terms. I rather doubt they do under that label, as it sounds like you want general travel insurance which covers loss of your deposits if you cancel the trip for covered reasons (death in the family, serious illness, etc.). If you want a policy that covers you just changing your mind, they are pretty expensive, of course, as someone who buys that most likely isn't sure they want to go.

Different travel insurers have their own terms, but in terms, you have to buy it within a short time of when you made your first payment of any kind for a particular trip, for it to cover preexisting medical conditions. The terms state the time period, it's usually within a couple weeks, I think. Yes, the same policy covers all your expenses for a trip, you just add up the total amount you are trying to insure (which means what you have at stake to lose if you cancel, not the cost of your entire trip, as some fees would be refundable or partially so -- say an airline ticket you can change with a $200 change fee, you insure $200 for that). If you are renting 2 places during the same trip, you can't get away with buy a different policy for the second one with different coverage dates as they want to know the first date of your entire trip.

Other than worrying about preexisting conditions (which would be medical, of course), you actually don't have to take the insurance out until shortly before your trip, if you don't want to, as the prices don't change. So you could wait until you are at risk to lose something for cancelling if you want. But you don't have to take it out the exact date you book, no.

There are 3 different type of protections offered. Depends on what you want as far as coverage. It is based on the entire trip, so it appears that only one "purchase" is needed. You specify the total cost of trip and work from that amount. You do pay up front.

Thanks for your input. From what I can understand the VRBO protection is basically for the vacation rental only, or have I got it wrong? It would make sense to get coverage for the whole vacation, including the rental, (from VRBO or someone else), need to look into it. Thanks again.
