Love locks removed!
The city of Paris removed 37 panels of love locks on the Pont des Arts and the Pont de l'Archevêché today. It will remove more panels in the coming days. No fines are planned at the moment for anybody putting (anti)love locks on a bridge.
The city is still looking for alternatives.

Good news!
Alternatives?! How about hiring a few huskies to toss love lockers over the railing into the Seine? "Pour encourager les autres" actions like that would surely stop the practice dead in its tracks. Shouldn't have to toss more than half a dozen or so and folks would get the idea.

Didn't one of those bridges have some sort of railing section collapse under the lock weight? There was a piece on TV here in which a reporter interviewed passers-by about the whole lock situation. Some of the folks said they had no idea that the lock thing could be the least bit dangerous. When they were told about the "weight" issue there were more than a few "duh" moments.

Unfortunately, nytraveler, I think you may be mistaken on this one -- those images that each of them carries of locking that lock -- and perhaps the photos and selfies of them doing so -- probably outweigh any consideration of cost or consequence, at least until they break up -- at which time, I doubt that the lock is highest on their priority list! And I don't think its the ONLY thing many couples do that is an extraordinary waste of time and money, and that couples continue to do time, after time, after time.
But cutting the locks off routinely would be a good idea.
