Las Vegas hotel near the airport
We're going to be landing in L.V. at 7:30 in the evening and are planning on getting our rental car the next morning (early) and drive north to tour the parks for 5 days. We'll be coming back to spend 3 days in L.V. So we just need a basic overnight hotel near the airport where we will probably pick up our car. We aren't planning on going out to the Strip that evening - just dinner and to sleep.
Anybody can recommend a suitable basic hotel that is clean (very important) and cheap?

Agree, just find a deal on a hotel on the strip. You might even wait to rent the car till the next day...depending on daily price.

The airport is practically on the doorstep of many hotels on S. Las Vegas Blvd (The Strip). If you go to Google maps and zoom in on the airport you'll see them just to the west and NW. If you really feel you must be right at the airport I see some cheap options (Motel 6, Travelodge, etc.) right across the runways from the terminal.

We stayed at La Quinta Inns and Suites on Paradise Rd. Great location and they have an airport shuttle that will come to the airport and collect you. We stayed there the whole time we were in LV--it is about a 5-10 minute drive to the center of the Strip where we would park at one of the hotels free. Never needed to spend the money on the Strip hotels--just parked and enjoyed the walking.

There are a lot of hotels on Paradise Road, but you have to be careful because they are not all within easy walking distance of restaurants, etc.
My advice: Do in fact stay in a smaller non-casino hotel off the Strip, where check-in will be faster and easier.
HOWEVER: Pick up your car on arrival. Car rentals are based on a 24-hour day, so this will likely not add a full day to your rental agreement and will give you the opportunity to get out and about and at least see the lights (and have access to cheaper off-Strip restaurants).

Since the OP says they will have the car for 5 days while touring, then they will most likely get a weekly rate, so the day doesn't matter much but they did indicate they weren't getting the car until next morning anyway. IF you plan on having the car while back in LV after touring [not really needed if you are staying in LV the entire time] then you are looking at 8 days, SO that extra day [picking up the car upon arrival] MIGHT matter.

We'll have the car the whole time we're in LV because we want to stay off the Strip and we don't want to walk our feet off. We'll be coming in late so we won't be hitting the Strip the first night and won't need a car. If we decide we do, we'll arrange to pick it up at the airport.
What part of Paradise Road is close to the restaurants?
