Is there still a 'free' day to see museums in Amsterdam?

My husband remembers (from 30 yrs ago) that the museums were open one day a wk for free for the locals. Is this still in play?

No idea, but if you search for the museums on-line, you should be able to find out easily enough.

No. Buy a museum card if you are planning on visiting a lot of museums.

Yes. There is a museum weekend when there are free or reduced price admissions. 6 and 7 April in 2013. But usually very very busy. Museum card is a great option particularly for Amsterdam.
