Friends of mine will be based in Skiathos with family. It will be their first visit to Greece whilst family lives in Greece.

Can my pals visit Mykonos or Santorini easily from Skiathos? Ferry? Plane? Are there other interesting vists from Skiathos for a first timer? My friends will be in Athens for a few days before they go to the island.

Suggestions welcomed.

To get to either Mykonos or Santorini from Skiathos means a flight or ferry/bus combo back to Athens for another flight or ferry onward. The ferry option will most likely mean an overnight in Athens unless your arrival at ATH gives you enough time to get to Rafina by bus for a ferry to Mykonos that afternoon. It really depends on when their travel dates.

Check the ferry schedules to see if it's possible to get to Skopelos for a daytrip. Otherwise it means staying there overnight before they can return to Skiathos.

Skiathos is located in Central Greece, near to the town of Volos and the Pilion mountain.
There are tours offered on the island, a day trip to Skopelos, the famous Mamma Mia island, is one of the most popular tours....

Pilion is one of the nicest greek mountains with amazing villages, the most known ones are : Tsangarada, Milies, Vizitsa, Makrinitsa and Portaria.
There are plenty of traditional small hotels mansions turned into hotels in most villages and many good restaurants as the area is famous for good food.
Volos is the main city located on the foot of Pilion and a nice city to spend a few hours.

From Volos you can also reach Meteora, i think this is being offered as an excursion from Skiathos travel agencies as well, but can be done individually with a rental car as well.

One of my first trips to Greece was Skiathos. At the time there were organised day trips to Delphi, Meteora, and Athens. Flying dolphins took the tourists to Agios Konstantinos, from where they were taken by bus to the respective sites, then returned to Skiathos by another flying dolphin. Although it was a very long day, and we had only 3-4 hours at each site, it was well worth it to me. I still regret not taking the trip to Meteora, but did the other two.

Your friends will have to check at Skiathos travel agencies to see what is available while they are there. It should be possible to book at short notice.

If your friends wish to visit Mykonos or Santorini they need to split their time between there and Skiathos, and it may require a night in Athens en route. Unfortunately there is only one flight per day between Skiathos and Athens, leaving late afternoon or evening.
