14 Days for Southern Germany - What Countries to Add?

After spending a few days near Nuremburg, my wife and I have the remainder of two weeks by car in Germany and plan to primarily stay in Munich, Heidelburg and the Mosel Valley. We are mid-40's & english speaking only, and enjoy castles, museums, small shops, and good wine/food. I would like to add a 2-night side trip and am considering Salzburg AU, Strausburg FR, or Luxembourg City. Any suggestions? We would appreciate any input.

I think the highlight of Germany is Garmisch. Its right near the Austrian border. We live in Heidelberg and we've been to Garmisch 6 times in the last 2 years. Its beautiful there and theres alot to do. When you go to Heidelberg, you can check out the Heidelberg castle. I wouldn't pay to go inside. Its not worth the $. You can walk around the grounds and see some great views from up there, as well as get a great photo op of the old bridge. If you have any more questions that I might be able to help you with, let me know. Happy travels to you and your wife.

If you decide to go to Garmisch, check out the Neuschwanstein castle. Its well worth the $ to go inside. Just remember to buy your tickets at the bottom of the hill. Then walk up and you should be just in time for your tour.

Salzburg is a great place to visit but be prepared for the crowds. It's a wonderful tourist attraction. While there make a side trip to the salt mines. It's a fun attraction too.

Becky is right. G-P is a beautiful town and lots of outdoors things to do.

Strausbourg is also a worthwhile visit. The Dom is worth the trip as are the canals.

Have fun!

Hi,

Along the Mosel visit Burg Eltz. Fantastic castle in a "classic" castle location, if that makes any sense. We also loved the town of Cochem on the Mosel.

Between the Mosel and Munich, I'd suggest staying a night or two in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Touristy but well worth a visit. The 500 yr. old wood carved alter by Tilman Riemanschneider, in St. Jacobs church, is a must see IMO. The Nightwatchman's Tour was probably the best hour we spent there. In the Herrgottskirche in Creglingen, near Rothenburg, is another Tilman Riemanschneider wood carved alter masterpiece.

Salzburg is fantastic. We've been 4 times and it's one of our favorite old towns. Between Munich and Salzburg (which is roughly a 2 hour drive) is "Mad" King Ludwig's amazing Neues Schloss/Herrenchiemsee.

For our visits to Salzburg, we prefer to stay in the Berchtesgaden area (Ramsau in particular). Beautiful scenery and just a 20 or so minute drive to/from Salzburg.

We have some pic's at:
