La Casa de Mi Abuela Review
An old stone wall circles this famous budget-traveler haunt. Extensive gardens, with 2,000 square meters of green space grace this compound-like resort, but the English-speaking owners show their sense of humor in its centerpiece: a rusted Fiat van. The basic, wood-paneled standard rooms with well-worn furniture and tiny bathrooms do the job, but for only $15 USD more, the junior garden suites—with contemporary furnishings and amenities—are much nicer. Regardless of the room, the elaborate breakfast buffet in the garden terrace is hard to top. At night you can clean up, read a book in a hammock, listen to the live piano music at the bar or take a dip in the pool. It's a five- to seven-minute walk to the Plaza de Armas.
