El Paso

El Paso has a landscape rife with hiking trails through desert flatlands and up mountain peaks, while southeastern New Mexico, not far away, offers isolated streams and rivers—the Gila River, for example, is a popular waterway for white-water rafting. There's a flood of fishing and boating opportunities just outside El Paso and just inside New Mexico, including Bonito Lake (Ruidoso, N.M.) and Caballo Lake (Truth or Consequences, N.M.), where skiers ski, boaters boat, and swimmers swim. There are fishing areas along the Pecos and Gila rivers. Within El Paso, anglers cast their lines into the lake at Ascarate Park. Catfish bite in Plain View and Hideaway lakes, private water bodies in El Paso County that charge a pittance to fish.
