University City Fodor's choice

A musical flagship in West Philly, WCL's building also houses the radio station WXPN-FM, which emphasizes acoustic, independent, and world-beat contemporary artists. The café also has two theaters—the largest of which, Downstairs Live, seats up to 300 (and can fit more, depending on configurations)—and two restaurants.

Chris' Jazz Café

Center City West

An intimate hangout off the Avenue of the Arts (aka Broad Street), Chris' showcases top talent Monday through Saturday. The jazz club stays accessible by doing the simple things right—friendly service, fair prices, great performers. The lunch and dinner menus feature some light New Orleans–style touches.

Kung Fu Necktie

Fishtown

A block removed from the major intersection of Frankford and Girard, KFN hosts indie music acts in a small, moody barroom hidden underneath the elevated tracks of SEPTA's Market-Frankford line. They book both local and national bands.

Mermaid Inn

Chestnut Hill

Head to the Mermaid, as the Northwest Philly locals do, to hear excellent live music (folk, blues, rock, jazz) and drink from an interesting selection of bottled beers. Depending on who is playing, there may be a cover charge of $10.

MilkBoy

Center City East

The city outpost of the coffee house and recording studio in Ardmore, MilkBoy Philly features a down-to-earth café and bar on the street level, with a narrow, intimate performance space up top. It attracts mostly indie rock acts, both locals and touring outfits.

Ortlieb's Lounge

Northern Liberties
Back open and humming after a series of ownership changes, this out-of-the-way venue in NoLibs has expanded its musical scope well beyond the traditional jazz. The vintage barroom, named after a defunct Philly brewery, now books indie rock, hip-hop, funk, and more. Hit up the bar for the cheap tacos, pretty close to the perfect drinking snacks.

The Fillmore Philadelphia

Fishtown
One of Philadelphia's newest venues for live music, the 25,000-square-foot Fillmore capitalizes on the rising relevance of the Fishtown neighborhood, introducing a rock club experience for the 21st century. Three raised balconies providing solid sight lines for as many as 2,500 concertgoers, with a secondary club, the Foundary, holding about 450.

Theatre of Living Arts

South Philadelphia

The TLA, a former independent movie house, is a South Street institution that helped launch the careers of many indie filmmakers, in addition to hosting regular screenings of cult hits like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Today, it presents concerts by a range of rock, blues, hip-hop, and adult alternative acts.

Time

Center City East

A rocking big-city club from the same owners of the nearby Vintage Wine Bar, Time features three concepts in one—a whiskey-heavy cocktail bar; a dining room with a bar and live music seven nights a week; and an upstairs lounge and music venue. Downstairs acts tend toward the jazz persuasion, while DJs tend to dominate up top.

Union Transfer

Northern Liberties
A former train station and restaurant converted into a haven for live music, Union Transfer might be Philly's best pound-for-pound place to catch a show. The spacious layout, impressive booking, and incredible sound make for an easygoing, one-of-a-kind concert experience.
