Mordecai Historic Park

Fodor's Review:

You can see the Mordecai family's Greek Revival plantation home and other historically significant structures that have been moved onto the 2-acre property, including the house where President Andrew Johnson was born in 1808. Moses Mordecai, a well-respected lawyer, married two granddaughters of Joel Lane, the "Father of Raleigh." Mordecai's descendants lived in the house until 1964. There are guided tours hourly from 10 to 3 Tuesday to Saturday, and from 1 to 3 on Sunday. The historical figure's name is pronounced MOR-de-key. Using a long "i" will mark you as a newcomer immediately.

  • Cost: Free; guided tour $5
  • Open: Tues.-Sat. 1 hr after sunrise-1 hr before sunset
