Stone Arch Bridge
Stone Arch Bridge Review
Built by German and Swiss stonemasons around 1880, this bridge crossing Calicoon Creek is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of few hex murders on record was committed on the bridge in 1882. A curse was placed on Adam Heidt, which was said to have caused him much distress. Heidt and his son, Joseph, decided that killing a man named George Markert would break the curse, and one night, while Markert was crossing the bridge, Joesph shot Markert five times in the head, clubbed him with a heavy chair leg he used as a cane, and dumped the body over the bridge into the icy waters below. Joseph was convicted of the murder and spent several years in prison. Sightings of a ghost walking the bridge are reported to be Markert.
