Fodor's Expert Review Gallatin Gateway Inn

122 W Main St., Bozeman, Montana, 59715, USA

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Back in 1927 the Milwaukee Railroad built this inn as a stopping-off point for visitors to Yellowstone National Park. Carved beams crisscross the 23-foot ceiling of the long, rectangular lobby, and a modern, Western style decorates the guest rooms painted in soothing earth tones. The bathrooms are fitted with original tile work and brass fixtures. Crisp white linens and candlelight set the formal tone in the restaurant ($$$–$$$$), which serves regional cuisine.

PROS

  • downtown Bozeman is outside your front door
  • staff is young, hip and always happy to share hiking tips
  • it's dog-friendly

CONS

  • no complimentary on-site parking
  • rooms could use curtains that block more light
  • can be loud since it's on Main Street
