Children in New Orleans

Be sure to plan ahead and involve your youngsters as you outline your trip. When packing, include things to keep them busy en route. On sightseeing days try to schedule activities of special interest to your children. The Times-Picayune publishes a "Family Affairs" column in its Friday weekly arts and entertainment insert Lagniappe that lists upcoming events for families and kids. The Louisiana Children's Museum, the Audubon Zoo, and the Insectarium are excellent resources for activities that are both educational and fun.

Be sure to plan activities for kids in the French Quarter with an aim to avoiding Bourbon Street. Things are out in the open, whether you plan to see them or not. In the evening, Bourbon Street quickly becomes overloaded with large, noisy, and inebriated crowds. With kids in tow, it's best to steer clear.

If you're renting a car, don't forget to arrange for a car seat when you reserve.
