Waianae

Region
ABOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Waianae refers to both the town and the western (leeward) shores of Oahu, from Ko Olina up to Yokohama Bay and the end of the road near Kaena Point. It’s mostly rural, without tourist traps and few restaurants apart from fast-food outlets, tiny cafés, and hole-in-the-wall poke shacks. Still, the Waianae coast is well worth a day trip, mostly to experience an area where "real" Hawaiians, descendants of natives who populated the coast centuries before the haoles (white people) arrived, live and play. The beaches boast crystal clear water. Turtles and dolphins swim near the shores, and when surf's up, Oahu's finest shredders show up to have fun and wow the watchers on the sand.
