Fodor's Expert Review Windward Garden B&B

435 Hoolawa Rd., Haiku-Pauwela, Hawaii, 96708, USA

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Eco-conscious travelers will appreciate this tranquil, nearly off-the-grid bed-and-breakfast located on 5 secluded acres in rural Pauwela on Maui's dramatic northeastern coastline. The plantation-style main house, built in 1976 from salvaged materials, runs entirely on solar power and gets its water from a private well. But don't think you'll be sacrificing modern comforts: there's a full kitchen, gas appliances, spacious living areas, hardwood floors, tasteful decor featuring original artwork, Wi-Fi, and private balconies in each of the three suites. For a more private experience, opt for the one-bedroom Aloha Cottage or the newly renovated Studio Cottage. Owners Chris and Susan Gebb serve a complimentary full breakfast daily on the breezy, wrap-around lanai with ocean views of Hauini Bay.

PROS

  • friendly, local hosts (Chris and Susan Gebb)
  • unique Maui experience

CONS

  • far from town, stores, beaches, and bus stop—a car is a must
  • two of the suites share a bathroom
