Roy's Poipu Bar & Grill Review

Hawaii's culinary superstar, Roy Yamaguchi, is fond of sharing his signature Hawaiian fusion cuisine by cloning the successful Honolulu restaurant where he got his start. You'll find one of these copycat eateries on Kauai's South Shore in a shopping-center locale that feels too small and ordinary for the exotic food. As with most restaurant branches, it just doesn't have the heart and soul of the original. Still, it does have delicious food and impeccable service. Scallops, fresh island fish, chicken, and filet mignon are elevated above the ordinary by their sauces and beautiful presentation. Save room for the signature chocolate soufflé or warm pineapple upside-down cake. Reservations recommended.

Roy's Poipu Bar & Grill Review

The one on Maui is bigger and better, but the food is the same here. As usual, one must try the appetizers, since they are all good. The fish is excellent and the sauces superb. I do not eat desert but people tell me they are good.

    Best meal of the week

My fiance was hesitant about going to this chain. We ended up there because we didn't want to drive far. First off the service was excellent. The server was very attentive and informative. We started off with the canoe for two. It consisted of baby back ribs, pot stickers, ahi sashimi and spring rolls. It was excellent. Our main meal was amazing. I had the fish special with miso broth and shrimp fried rice. I can't express how great this dish was. It was by far the favorite of the whole week. My fiance had a Hawaiian fish dish that was suberb. We finished off our meal with a delicious upside down pineapple cake with vanilla bean ice cream. Wow, I wish I was eating that right now.

    Nothing special

We had great memories of Roy's on Maui. This place was okay, at best. Ambience was as good as sitting in a mall can be; service was polite but not much more; fish was well-prepared but at these prices, you expect a little more than that. DEFINITELY get a reservation if you want to go. But don't look at it as a high point of your vacation.

If overcooked fish, a lot of noise

and waiters in a hurry to get you through so they can have another seathing appeal to you, be sure to eat at Roy's. Otherwise, try Tidepools or Casa Blanca.
