Fodor's Review

Don't let the name fool you. Though Hilo's best Chinese restaurant does specialize in seafood (the salt-and-pepper prawns are fantastic), it also offers a wide range of other Cantonese treats, including a sizzling lamb platter, salt-and-pepper pork, Mongolian beef or chicken, and vegetarian specialties like garlic eggplant and crispy green beans. The food is decent, portions are large, and the price is right, but don't come here expecting any ambience—this is a funky and cheap Chinese restaurant, with a few random pieces of artwork tacked up here and there.

Best Chinese in Hilo

My husband being half-Chinese and his mother having been born in China, I feel I can confidently say this is by far the best Chinese we've had while living in Hilo. It tastes just as good as the amazing food we were used to eating while living in Southern California. It's not super cheap and everything is served family-style. If you're craving Chinese I highly suggest this place. Their house special fried rice, sauteed green beans with chicken, and

duck are among our favorites!

Happy Valley Seafood Restaurant Review

STAY AWAY!!!!! This was the WORST Chinese food we have ever been served. The only reason we went to this restaurant was because of the Fodor’s review and I have to say we have never been so disappointed with a meal. We were not expecting much in the way of atmosphere, so that was not a big issue, even though they seated the 4 of us at a huge round table in the back, just outside the restrooms, when there were plenty of other empty tables in

the restaurant. Secondly, the owner’s young son was playing games on a laptop computer at the table next to us and we had to listen to the annoying video game sounds until they finally had him turn it down, which took quite a while. Then there was the food. We love Chinese food, but this food was so overcooked it was inedible (most of it deep fried so long we couldn’t cut through it with a steak knife, which we had at the table because one of our party ordered the broccoli beef and couldn’t cut through the beef with a regular knife, although it did a good job on the brownish, overcooked broccoli). The only items we ordered that were good were the salt and pepper prawns, so at least we had something to eat along with the fried rice, which was the only other edible food on the table. When our waitress finally came over (it was a very slow night – maybe because their food is so horrible –but it was hard to get the attention of a waitress and were mostly ignored) we showed her our food and the issues with it and she said “oh, I’m sorry” and agreed it was terribly overcooked, but no offer to get us something else or take anything off the ticket and just walked away. We waited for another 15 – 20 minutes before another waitress came over with the ticket and asked if we wanted boxes for our food. We told her that the food was inedible so we would pass on the “to go” boxes and we told her that we had explained our displeasure with the food to our first waitress (which she told us had gotten off shift and left for the day) and she said she could see that indeed the food was very overcooked. She did not offer to bring us anything else off the menu either but did say she was sorry it was so overcooked. We then looked at the ticket and could see that there was no discount on our bill ( which was just under $70 dollars) and I told her that I felt since we were not offered anything else that the bill should be discounted. She went back to talk to the owner, who said no, there would not be a discount offered. I then pulled out my DSLR camera and took pictures of the food and the bill and shortly afterward the owner came out and offered us a 10% discount. Although I personally felt she should have taken some of the worst items off the bill entirely (the “cook”, which I believe was her husband, should have NEVER sent that food out of the kitchen like that in the first place and the waitress should not have served it either) we accepted the 10% and then left, unhappy and hungry. We were very, very disappointed in the whole experience and although we know things can change from the time of the initial review, I was very surprised this restaurant even made it into the book at all and was sorry we ever went there. We hope this will keep others from making the same mistake we made and that Fodor’s will take another look at this restaurant and their food quality and revise their review.
