You need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to navigate the roads in the Wheeler Geologic Area, a 640-acre area distinguished by dramatically eroded pinnacles of volcanic tuff, but it's worth the effort. A drive through subalpine terrain takes you to a series of magical-looking spires, pinnacles, and domes. Once there, exploring is on foot or horseback. It's about 7 miles southeast of Creede.
