With just one taste of his green papaya salad, you'll be hooked on the inspired cooking of North Vietnam-born Jimmy Kwok. His casual bistro, located on the mildly sketchy edge of the Tenderloin, brims at lunchtime with savvy eaters from Civic Center offices. For dinner, Kwok draws devotees from over the city who come not only for the salad, but also for his roast squab, bun cha Hanoi (broiled pork, herbs, rice vermicelli, and lettuce wrapped in rice paper), and salt-and-pepper Dungeness crab with garlic noodles. Kwok punctuates his Asian menu with a handful of French dishes. Cap your meal with crème caramel or a bowl of lemongrass ice cream.

Female hostess was rude and unfriendly, atmosphere was noisy, and price was steep, lemongrass chicken was dry.
