Department Stores, Union Square
Fodor's Review:
It's a San Francisco institution, dating back to the 19th century, and it's a strikingly luxurious one. The airy store exudes a museumlike air, with its large decorative vases, sumptuous housewares, and a gobsmacking Tahitian pearl display. Locals line up to register for weddings. But it's also a great place to pick up gifts, such as their Golden Gate Bridge notecards or their silverplated butter spreaders in a signature Gump's box.
