Westgate Hotel

Fodor's Review:

A modern high-rise near Horton Plaza hides what must be the most opulent Old World-style hotel in San Diego. The lobby, modeled after the anteroom at Versailles, is done in antiques and Baccarat chandeliers. Rooms are individually furnished with Italian marble counters and bath fixtures with 24-karat-gold overlays. From the ninth floor up the views of the harbor and city are breathtaking, but some views have been obscured by newer buildings. Afternoon tea, with or without champagne, is served in the lobby to the accompaniment of piano and harp music. The San Diego Trolley stops right outside the door. Pros: Elegant rooms, grand lobby, near shopping. Cons: Formal atmosphere, somewhat gritty neighborhood.
