Point Loma to Harbor Island Driving Tour
Take Catalina Boulevard all the way south to the tip of Point Loma to reach Cabrillo National Monument. North of the monument, as you head back into the neighborhoods of Point Loma, you'll see the white headstones of Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Continue north on Catalina Boulevard to Hill Street and turn left to reach the dramatic Sunset Cliffs, at the western side of Point Loma near Ocean Beach. Park to tour the dramatic cliff tops and the boiling seas below, but be cautious because the cliffs can be unstable. Signs generally warn you where not to go. Head north on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard until you reach Newport Avenue, where you will make a left to enter the heart of Ocean Beach. If you have your dog with you, head north to Ocean Beach's Dog Beach or check out surfers from the Ocean Beach Pier off Niagara Avenue. Just before the pier, turn left onto Newport Avenue, OB's main drag.
Return to Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and backtrack south to take a left on Point Loma Avenue. Turn left at Canon Street, which leads toward the peninsula's eastern (bay) side. Almost at the shore you'll see Scott Street, Point Loma's main commercial drag. Scott Street is bisected by Shelter Island Drive, which leads to Shelter Island. For another example of what can be done with tons of material dredged from a bay, go back up Shelter Island Drive, turn right on Rosecrans Street, another right on North Harbor Drive, and a final right onto Harbor Island.
