Fodor's Expert Review Silverado Resort and Spa

1600 Atlas Peak Rd., Napa, California, 94558, USA

If you like your resort to feel more country club than posh bastion, you'll likely find a stay at this 1,200-acre property satisfying. Two 18-hole championship golf courses command much of the real estate, along with endless lawns, a spa, several pools, more than a dozen tennis courts, and 340 condos whose owners rent them out when not in Napa. The ones managed by the resort, which range from studios to three-bedroom suites, all with kitchens or kitchenettes, are done up in muted brown and beige shades that keep the focus on the greenery outside. All the condos are decorated smartly enough, if not glamorously, and the beds are comfortable. Owners here aren't required to rent out their units through the resort (Airbnb and VRBO list some), but the ones that do are held to standards of quality and consistency.

PROS

  • two championship golf courses, several pools, and more than a dozen tennis courts
  • The Grill for evening fine dining and Boost Café in the Market for grab-and-go breakfast and lunch
  • full-service spa

CONS

  • units rented out through Airbnb and VRBO can be problematic to book
  • not as luxurious as similar Napa Valley resorts (though hardly down at the heels)
  • can be a madhouse during PGA events
