One of the easiest day trips from Puerto Escondido is the wildlife preserve of this lagoon, about 14 km (9 mi) from the center of town. It's a birder's paradise, with pelicans, hawks, hummingbirds, and spoonbills in the surrounding mangrove forests. Although an inexpensive half-day tour from Puerto Escondido is the most convenient way to visit, you can also drive or take public transportation and hire a boatman to the lagoon's beaches and restaurants.
