This sleepy island has a surprisingly healthy nightlife scene, with a variety of options to choose from. Most bars close by midnight, but the party continues at the nightclubs until 2 am. The majority of venues are within downtown’s four-block radius, with a few others along Playa Norte. The proximity makes barhopping on foot perilously convenient.
Isleños also celebrate many holidays and festivals in El Pueblo, usually with live entertainment. Carnaval, held annually in February or March (the week before Lent), turns sleepy Isla Mujeres into party central with music, dancing, and colorful parades in the zócalo. In Mardi Gras–like fashion, locals dressed in costumes liven up the island with decorated golf carts and dance performances. Other popular events include Founder’s Day (August 17), which marks the island’s official founding by the Mexican government. From October 31 to November 2, locals head to the cemetery to honor their dearly departed during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations.
Best known for its terrific cocktails and live music, Fayne's is a brightly painted place with a hip, energetic personality. The party kicks off nightly at 8 with everything from American rock to Caribbean rhythms providing the soundtrack. Bring your dancing shoes.
From 10 am to midnight, you can grab a swing or hammock, order a cold drink, and let the hours roll by at Buho's palapa beach bar. For M$60, you can also rent a Buho's lounge chair on Playa Norte, which includes a free nonalcoholic beverage.
When you're looking for live music, cold beer, good bar food, and a satellite TV that's always tuned to the current game, make tracks for Jax, open daily until 11 pm.
Although it caters mostly to guests of the Privilege Aluxes hotel, you can also visit this architecturally modern bar that plays chill-out music by day and has live music at night, just make sure to book a table (or a palapa) in advance via email. The fish tacos are a perfect cerveza accompaniment. Try to stop by for the gorgeous sunset.
