The rooms at this centrally situated, locally owned hotel are among the best of the budget category in Tamarindo. Two wings, painted white and decorated with floral motifs in the style of the artisans of Sarchí, are well back from the busy main road, on grounds with colorful gardens, coconut palms, and other trees. The beach and surf break are across the street. Rooms are quite basic, some with cold-water showers, but most have air-conditioning and all have Wi-Fi. Guests
sometimes share meals in the well-equipped common kitchen. The atmosphere is surprisingly serene, and the friendly staff can arrange turtle-watching, horseback riding, and other tours.

We stayed at the Cabinas Marielos in Tamarindo. The rooms are minimally furnished but OK since you won't be spending any time in your room anyway. The owner can get you on the turtle tour for $28 per person--way cheaper than the average of $35-$45 we saw elsewhere. The turtle tour was the most memorable event of our trip. After a fast paced hike along the beach at 10pm, we got to see a giant leatherback lay all of her eggs! We were all crouched in
the sand a foot away from her.
