Hiking

Larch forests, flower- and herb-filled meadows, and glacial zones host 350 km (218 miles) of trails at all levels of difficulty. Historic routes cross passes into Italy and extend outbound along ridgelines toward the river. Bus and lift services make it easy to return to the village in time for dinner. Most hotels happily pack a lunch for the outing, or you can stop at buvettes (snack bars) scattered along the trails.

One popular option is to take a cable car over to Hannig mountain station at 7,710 feet for a three-hour hike to a glacial lake and back down to Saas-Fee. To start from Hannig, follow the path toward Schönegg.

Another option is the timeworn pilgrimage route from Saas-Fee to Saas-Grund, which offers stops at 15 shrines with costumed wooden statues strung along the path like beads on a rosary.
