Ancien Cinéma Café Club

Fodor's choice

An absolute gem. This bar-café doubles up as both a gig venue and fully fledged cinema. The clues are littered all over the walls, as stars of the silver screen peer down at you. Most of the time, it's just flickering silent films as background detail, but it shows the odd classic or documentary. Add to that friendly service, a decent choice of beers, solid pub food, and the occasional live band, and you have the best night out in the Ardennes.

Bistrot de la Presse

Bistrot de la Presse is a hangout for journalists.

Cafe de la Poste – Beim Wohli

Echternach isn't a town with a thriving nightlife, but this raggedy café-bar overlooking the basilica is a cheerful spot for an evening. Board games, good music, and a giant, sci-fi-looking fountain centerpiece that the owner claims "cost as much as a car" makes for a fun night.

Craft Corner

The lack of a decent brewpub in the city was evident before this plucky bar opened in the up-and-coming Bonnevoie area, south of the railway tracks. It styles itself as a gastro bar, but the lure here is the beer: around a dozen on tap, all from its own brewery. These run the gamut from IPAs and German-style wheat beers to the obligatory porter and less-common spelt brews.

De Gudde Wëllen

A colorful two-floor music bar on the peaceful cobbles of rue du St. Esprit. On weekends, it focuses on live bands (of the fuzzy-guitar, alt-rock variety), with the second floor turning into a blur of dancing youths. In warmer weather, they open a terrace a short walk away that has proved just as popular in recent years.

De Philosoff

This decades-old bar was lovingly raised from the ashes after it was sadly left vacant. A leafy terrace, a brasserie that dishes up giant burgers, and a decent selection of beers on tap make this a go-to drinking hole once again.

Ënnert de Steiler

The building of the oldest café-bar in the city dates back to the 14th century. It is a work of art, with stone arches framing the exterior. Inside, you’re as likely to find besuited twentysomething city types belting out Oasis songs, dancing on the spot to '90s dance music, or a live salsa band. It’s a real pick 'n' mix.

Go Ten

The decor and snacks in this stylish city center bar are both Japanese inspired. Inside, it's fleshed out in colorful floral blinds and foliage, though the cooler kids stick to the terrace outside.

Melusina

Melusina is basically a restaurant-cum-disco (pop and techno on weekends) but also draws top local musicians and touring guests for occasional jazz concerts.

Rives de Clausen

Occupying the site of the former Mousel brewery, this is not one but around 10 bars and clubs, all lined up one after the other, and which together have become the place for a night out, especially among the younger crowd who like to drink and dance into the early hours. The bars vary only slightly in décor and styles of music offered (but not volume, which is universally loud), but are so close together you can move from one to another in seconds if the mood in one doesn't suit.

Scott's Pub

Scott's Pub caters to Anglophiles and is located in the Grund.

Scott's Pub

Scott's Pub, at the bottom of the valley, is a popular gathering place for English-speakers, where outdoor tables line the picturesque Alzette. Flooding in 2021 destroyed much of the terrace and interior, but it has had a refurb and is as good as new. Still the best place to have a pint of bitter in the Grund.

Urban

Lying in the maw of the lively rue du Marché-aux-Herbes bar street, this enduringly cool spot has always been a step ahead of its noisier, more louche competitors. A long bar, good cocktails, and a busy terrace in the warmer months ensure its popularity among the international-set regulars.

Vinoteca

The hidden terrace at this popular wine bar and shop, near the old fish market, is a rare find. It has superb views across to the forts of Kirchberg. The collection of local wines is naturally excellent, with a decent selection by the glass accompanied by some rather pricey tapas.

Vis-à-vis

A welcome stop for a postshopping drink. This café-bar spans that happy divide between local hangout and tourist-friendly escape. It has made looking unintimidating into an art form, and the small tables outside are prized real estate in summer.
