Near the town of Laveno, this beautiful lakeside hermitage was constructed in the 12th century by a local merchant to express his gratitude for having been saved from the wrath of a storm. It's particularly striking as you approach it by boat or ferry. About 20 km (12 mi) farther north on the eastern side of the lake, you will find comfortable and charming Liberty-style lodgings at the family-run Camin Hotel Luino (Via Dante 35, 21016, Luino. 0332/530118. 0332/537226. www.caminhotelluino.com.
