Guildhall

Guildhall Review

Throughout 2011 the Guildhall, one of Derry's most ornate Victorian sandstone buildings dating from 1890, underwent a ?3-million, top-to-botttom exterior restoration program. The beautiful stained-glass windows were repaired and cleaned, the Dumfries sandstone was replaced, the building re-roofed, and the landmark clock tower (with its Cambridge Quarter chimes) was cleaned. The clock, modeled on Big Ben, is the fourth-largest in Ireland. Inside, the eye is delighted by neo-Gothic strutwork, elaborate ceilings, baronial wood paneling, and a magnificent organ. The Guildhall also hosts occasional musical recitals and Derry City council meets here each month. Short tours are available July-September, daily 11-3.
