Coco-mat Hotel Athens

39 Patriarchou Ioakeim street, Athens, 10675, Greece

Why We Like It

We spend a third of our life sleeping, so it might as well be as good as it gets; a friendly, quirky hotel that guarantees excellent mattresses, downy duvets and a choice amongst 12 pillows can only make your stay in Athens superior. And then there's the location-–set in the capital's most swanky and polished neighborhood, with plenty of fabulous window shopping, museums, bar-hopping and dining to be enjoyed nearby, you're guaranteed to have plenty to do.

Fodor's Expert Review

The sleep-deprived traveler’s dream, this quirky hotel’s motto is: “Home is where your bed is.” The designer accommodations are run by the award-winning Coco-Mat company, which produces top quality, hand-made mattresses, duvet covers, furniture and pillows out of 100 percent natural materials and according to strictly eco-friendly standards.

Room

Rooms, lofts, and suites are modern with a clean and minimalist upscale version of the cozy IKEA home aesthetic. There are artsy decor touches and warm material accents in powder blue, burnt orange, and slate gray, and all rooms have a Nespresso coffee maker. The rooms are designed to act as a tranquil, unembellished, airy, naturally-lit (some rooms are not, so ask in advance if this is a priority) haven for quality rest. The bed (with a four-layer system worth almost $7,000 that offers special support to the body) is so comfy you will want to take it home with you. Guests can also choose the dreamiest pillow from a 12-item menu.

Tip If you want the peace and quiet to go with catching serious Zzs, don’t choose a street-facing room, as central Patriarchou Ioakeim is busy throughout the day.

Bathroom

With glossy white tiled walls, neutral tones, and earthy-zen aesthetics accentuated via back-lit mirrors, light-colored wood, round white vessel sinks and a decorative plant, the bathroom borrows from post-industrial chic blended with nature-loving minimalism to maintain the restful, contemporary, laid-back vibe.

Lobby

Probably one of the most unusual lobbies you’ve ever visited, as it’s also a shop-front and store where you can try out beds (they ship internationally!) as you wait to be checked in. A small, simple reception desk with friendly staff in casual-wear sets the tone for aspirations of a home-like experience.

Dining

Being in the heart of Kolonaki, one of the best areas for wining and dining, the hotel makes do with two simple yet charming areas. In the morning head to the Honesty Bar where the complimentary breakfast of fresh fruit, cheeses, muesli, breads, and tasty local nutritional snacks like halva are served. For a quick bite visit the rooftop restaurant and bar, which serves up light Mediterranean dishes and pretty views of the Acropolis.

Drinking

The roof garden restaurant is also an elegant and laid back bar serving good Greek and international wines and cocktails from sunset until the early hours.

Tip With an ecological anti-waste approach, the hotel leaves out the remaining buffet breakfast pastries and snacks for guests to nibble on throughout the day.

Shop

Indeed, you can take with you any pillow, mattress or furnishing you’d like to continue sleeping with--at a price--as the lobby is an actual Coco-Mat shop area too, and like the lobby remains open 24 hours.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The nearest metro stations are Evangelismos (10-minute walk) and Syntagma (10-minute walk). From both you can take the blue line to the airport (35-minutes away) or connect with other lines taking you around the city. There is also taxi rank just off Kolonaki square (2-minute walk).

Restaurants

Right next door to the Coco-Mat Hotel Athens you'll find one of the newest, liveliest, trendiest (and amongst the priciest) restaurant-bars in Kolonaki, Zurbaran (1-minute walk), which serves Greek-inspired fusion food together with French classics like Chateaubriand. For an old-school classic serving Greek home-cooked meals in a familial yet high-brow ambiance (a lot of politicians, actors, and intellectuals dine there) is Filippou's taverna (10-minute walk). For a farm-to-table menu inspired by Hollywood's stars, with plenty of creatively healthy options, is Nice N Easy (10-minute walk).

Bars

Do like local trendsetters and hang out for a few cocktails at loud, usually full-to-the-brim but unfortunately also smoky Minnie The Moocher (5-minute walk), which is themed on prohibition-era drinking holes. Or glam up in your sparkiest, gaudiest vintage garb and go round the corner to Cinderella bar-club (5-minute walk), where, after getting past the snooty bouncers you'll enter a world inspired from Studio 54. For warm, jazzy vibes and an extensive choice of whiskey drinks, visit Bar 56 (10-minute walk).
