Hamburg Sights

Mönckebergstrasse

Mönckebergstrasse Review

This broad street of shops—Hamburg's major thoroughfare—cuts through both the historic and the new downtown areas. It was built between 1908 and 1911 to connect the main train station to city hall. Because it's only open to taxis and buses, the street is a stroller's paradise. It's home to Karstadt and Galeria Kaufhof department stores, mega-electronics store Saturn, discount clothing store C & A, high-end women's fashion store AppelrathCüpper, modern fashions for both men and women at Peek & Cloppenburg, MAC cosmetics, Adidas, and other stores that sell a variety of products at every price point. The stores and shopping precincts on both sides of the street provide a wide selection of goods at more affordable prices than those on Jungfernstieg.
