Once an outbuilding on the estates of the Château de Biron, the Hôtel de France has never capitalized on its 13th-century heritage but today remains a small, modest family-run hotel that caters less to tourists than to locals—especially at its bar and restaurant (average main, $18), which serves rich regional food. Once you ascend its historic 15th-century masterpiece of a staircase, you'll find the guest rooms to be a clutter of old furniture (with a plastic-cabinet shower and toilet squeezed into the corner); some are quite large.
