On one of the most prestigious streets in Paris between the Opéra and Place Vendôme, this former inn was built in the mid-19th century. Even now that Wi-Fi has arrived, the public areas and rooms happily retain their period furniture, marble fireplaces, crystal chandeliers, and piped-in classical music. Duke's piano bar is a pleasant, popular rendezvous spot, and the hotel's gourmet restaurant, Le Céladon, serves outstanding French cuisine. The fitness center has a Moorish-inspired steam room and views over Paris's rooftops. Pros: prestigious location; good-value promotional rates on the Web site; popular jazz bar. Cons: not trendy; some views of air shaft; location makes the price higher than expected.

We stayed here in May 2007 for a week with friends and the near-perfect location (just a block off Place Vendome)added to the delight of our stay. We upgraded to the large Prince of Wales Suite and had a balcony overlooking Rue de la Paix. However, our friends' standard room was very small with a view of the air shaft. Service was thoughtful, the lobby and public rooms are elegant. Skip the restaurant, Le Celadon, and spend your money at a local bistro.
