You'll know you've found Marianne's when you see the line of people reading the bits of wisdom and poetry painted across the windows. This restaurant-deli serves excellent Middle Eastern and Jewish specialties like hummus, fried eggplant, and soul-warming chopped liver, which you can match with one of the affordable wines. The sampler platter lets you try four, five, or six items—even the smallest plate is a feast. Falafel sandwiches are served in the restaurant only on weekdays at lunch, though you can get them anytime at the takeout window.

We skipped the Picasso Museum (which was near closing time on the day before we were to leave) in order to have the fallafel sandwich again. If you order from the take-out window, make sure you have plenty of napkins! Depending on what time you go, you can also have very nice table service, but there is something about tahini running down your sleeve sitting on a curb... Then again, if you sit down, you can also have a glass of wine... Toss up, really - either way, the sandwich is amazing!
