Fodor's Review

This world-renowned cavernous spot with Art Deco murals practically defines the term brasserie. It's been popular since Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir were regulars, and it's still great fun. Today it attracts a mix of bourgeois families, tourists, and lone diners treating themselves to a dozen oysters. Recent additions to the classic brasserie menu are a tart of caramelized apple and panfried foie gras, beef fillet flambéed with cognac before your eyes, and profiteroles made with Valrhona chocolate. You usually can't make reservations after 8 or 8:30, so be prepared for a wait at the bar.

Poor serviec in a mediocre restaurant

My first time to this resturant was in 2009. The overall impression was that she offered good oysters at a reasonable price. I went again on 18th this month with my family of 6 people. After seated, we were not able to catch any of the waiters attention to attend to our orders. The service was poor as the cutlery were incomplete and inadequate for us. The waiter left before we finish the order. Only a 500ml carafe of water was offered for the whole

table. When more was requested, another carafe was literally dropped onto our table rudely. Our bottle of wine was put to the side of our table and left to us to fill our glasses. When the plater, soup and starters were finished, no one ever cared to clear the table for the following dishes. We were so disappointed that we left without going through our main dishes and desserts. Even though her business is thriving, she should deliver a little more respectful service to her customers. That would be the last time I would be visiting this place.

La Coupole Review

I hadn't been to La Coupole for many years, and my wife had never been. So we were there yesterday with our three young kids. For a Monday lunch, the place was maybe 30% full - to be expected I guess. Mainly elderly Parisians it would seem - a good sign. The atmosphere was surprisingly jolly. Everyone seemed to be drinking champagne and wine. Our waiter was exceptional. I can stumble along in French but he was happy to speak in English. Our starters

of Fench onion soup and fois gras were very good. Main course of Chateaubriand and steak tartar were superb. The kids menu of main course, pudding and drink for €11 was a bargain. The wine list is all French and reasonably priced. We had two bottles of cheapish wine and the bill was €230. If you're from the UK this is horribly expensive, but that's just the way it is at the moment. La Coupole is an institution - go there for the real French bistro experience. Previous posters seemed to have had a poor experience, but I never have.

We loved our experience

Scallops were to die for. Profiterole's fantastic! Okay the waiters didn't have much patience with people who did not speak French very well, but hey they are located in France!! I'd go back although it seemed a little pricey compared with some other places we went.

Awful Service

We went there about 10:30 at night on a Wednesday and the place was at best 40% full and still we got the worst service. They brought the food and the waiter disappeared. We were waiting more than 15 minutes after we finished our dinner for another waiter to pick up the plates and that is after trying at least 5 times to flag a waiter. The food was passable but the atmosphere was good. Overall, pick a different restaurant, any restaurant!

SO not worth it!!!

If you like overpaying for totally mediocre food, if you don't speak French and like feeling totally unwelcome, and if you especially like the feeling of a staff that tries to rip you off at every opportunity, then head IMMEDIATELY to this highly overated brasserie. For the life of me, I cannot understand why this place is still reccommended by ANY travel guide. There are SO MANY other places in Paris that serve much better food with a much nicer

attitude. For starters, the food is average at best. But it's the atmosphere and attitude that really makes this place so unappealing. After being seated, our waitress came over to the table. We explained we would need help with some of the descriptions on the all French menu. We didn't see her again for at least 20 minutes, and when we did, her descriptions were vague at best. When I asked for a plate to share the very large (but not even close to the best) order of Escargot with my son, I was brought another order. I explained that's not what we asked for, and it was taken back. My other son asked for the rumsteak (a supposed speciality of the place) that the people at the next table ordered, but was brought an entirely different cut of meat. When we repeated that he wanted the same thing as the people next to us, we were told that she thought he would prefer the more tender -- and more expensive -- meal that she had brought. Please. If you still think have have to go, book your reservation on line and you'll get a 15% discount. It'll take the sting away a bit. This was without a doubt the most unpleasant meal I've had in a long time, but at least it "only" cost over 200 Euro! That's with the 15% discount. And one of us only had a salad because we couldn;t get a clear explaination of the entrees.
