Bus Travel

As is typical throughout Austria, where trains don't go, the buses do, though some side routes are less frequently covered. Coordinating your schedule with that of the buses is not as difficult as it sounds. Austrian travel offices are helpful in this regard, or bus information is available in Klagenfurt and Salzburg. The Postbus network is extensive throughout Austria, with services remaining reliable even through adverse weather, including heavy snow. You can take the Postbus 650/651 from the Zell am See train station up and over the mountains to the Grossglockner glacier at Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, a 2½-hour trip. The bus runs twice a day from late June to the end of September. There's also a connecting bus from the glacier to Heiligenblut twice a day, so you can start the route from there, too.
