On the outskirts of Fort-de-France, the (once) classy Casino Batelière Plaza was built in a striking nouveau-plantation-house style, all yellow and white. Now at the entrance it has a large poster with a glamourous depiction of what it will look like with its new renovation. it can't happen soon enough, yet even management can't tell you when it will begin! By day it is depressing with locals playing the slot machines and video poker; a few cartons of tropical juice (usually empty) sit on a table with tiny plastic glasses. But some of the slots are new, as is electronic digital roulette, and there is now a Magic Wheel. Table games like Texas Hold'em, blackjack, stud poker, and English roulette. Slots open at 10 am, but table games don't start until after 8 pm. There's always a bar open, and you can often catch live entertainment on weekends from 8–midnight. Closing time is 4 am on Friday and Saturday, 3 am the rest of the week. It's open Sunday night, when most places are shut tight.
Restaurant Le Club Seven, which serves Franco-creole food, is open from 7:30 pm to 2 am, with themed parties on weekends. The food is quite good and well-priced. You may see billboards that say: CASINO or even GEANTE CASINO, with directionals. Do not follow them if you are looking for a gambling casino. CASINO is the name of a supermarket chain. GEANTE means a mega-supermarket.
