Hagley Park

Hagley Park Review

Once cultivated Maori land, Hagley Park was developed by Pakeha settlers in the mid-1800s with imported plants given trial runs in what would become the Botanic Gardens. Now the park is divided into four sections, which include walking and jogging tracks, cycling paths, and self-guided historic tours. Hagley Park North has sports fields and also draws people to its tennis and pétanque (boccie) courts; Little Hagley Park, which runs beside Harper Ave., is classified as a Heritage area. South Hagley Park has more sports facilities. The Botanic Gardens makes up the fourth quadrant and is closest to the city center.
