Tours

Hue Dragon Boat Station. Daily tour boats shuttle visitors between the citadel and the further-flung tombs. Several different packages are available, including guided tours. It's not the quickest way to get around, and in the wet monsoon months it's not even pleasant, but during the heat of the summer, the cool river breezes, relaxed pace, and views make it the perfect choice for those wanting to get the most from the journey. There's a second Dragon Boat station at 5 Le Loi Street, next door to La Residence Hotel and Spa. Toa Kham landing, 49 Le Loi St., Hue, Thua Thien-Hue. 0234/382–9611.

Mandarin Cafe Tours. Mandarin Cafe offers a selection of tours that involve escaping the walled citadel and introduce you to Hue's less-visited villages, culture, and people. One of the highlights is a scenic journey into the countryside visiting the villages of the conical-hat makers, imperial jewelers, and embroidery, lace, brass, and wood-sculpting craftspeople. You can get involved with the crafting, interact with the artisans, and shop at wholesale prices. Mandarin Cafe's owner, Mr. Cu, also has a fantastic DIY walking tour available for download from his website. 24 Tran Cao Van St., Hue, Thua Thien-Hue. 0234/382–1281; www.mrcumandarin.com.

Trails of Indochina. As the most reputable tour company in Vietnam, Trails of Indochina offers custom tours to Hue's main attractions and has highly experienced English-speaking guides. 21/1 Ngo Gia Tu St., Vinh Ninh Ward, Hue, Thua Thien-Hue. 0234/383–6525; www.trailsofindochina.com.

Vespa Safari. You now can travel in style in the former capital of Vietnam on a vintage Vespa. Vespa Safari offers tours that encourage you to discover the city and taste Hue's renowned specialties, or go out to the countryside and experience rural life. Vespa drivers will ride you right to the homes of friendly and welcoming locals in the city as well as in the villages. 64 Le Ngo Cat St., Thuy Xuan, Hue, Thua Thien-Hue. 097/191--0900.
