Chiang Mai has dozens of places where you can grab a beer or a cocktail, listen to live music, or both. Two centers of action are the Riverside area, where restaurants like the Good View double as bars later in the evening, and Nimmanhemin Road heading south from Huay Kaew Road. As with elsewhere in Thailand, many Bangkok-style hostess bars are easy to find, most notably at the western end of Loi Kroh Road, the southern end of Moon Muang Road, and the Bar Beer Center next to the Top North Hotel on Moon Muang Road.
Young Thais, many of whom are students at nearby universities, love the discos and music bars of the Nimmanhaemin Road area, a major nightlife scene. Visiting ravers under 40 won't feel out of place in haunts like Warm Up, where local bands play Thai pop music and, in between sets, a DJ spins house and EDM. If you don't want to put in earplugs, enjoy a drink at the low-key outdoor tables.
