Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore Review

For 30 years the Shangri-La has been one of Singapore's top hotels. Presidents have stayed here, but all travelers are treated to the same excellent service. Often referred to as "Singapore's other botanical garden," the hotel has 15 acres of flowers and plants, visible through the glass wall that encloses the lobby and dining areas. The Coffee Garden, styled after an English conservatory, has light meals and a lunch buffet; you'll find haute Cantonese cuisine in Shang Palace, fine California eats with late-night jazz at Blu, and Japanese at Nadaman.

As noted by Fodor, the Shangri La is surroundedby its beautiful garden (although due to additions of new wings to the hotel this is smaller than it once was!). It has a huge pool, and lots of room for sunbathing. There are 3 wings - the Tower (original one) the Garden Wing and the Valley Wing. I have stayed in all of them and have been coming back to this hotel since 1972! My personal favourite is the Garden wing since this overlooks the pool and has balconies. Ask for a high floor and be careful to pay for the pool view or you might find you have a view of the carpark!
Fodors lists The Coffee Garden as one of the restaurants...this is no longer there, and ahs been replaced by The Line, a buffet restaurant with around 15 different stations where you can sample many kinds of food (Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Italian to name a few!!) It is a great place for breakfast and a good bet for dinner if you don't want to leave the hotel. You can also eat outside on the terrace, but people can smoke there so you may want to eat indoors. The Shang Palace has been serving great Chinese food since 1972 and Blu, a smaller restaurant at the top of the Tower Wing, has an international reputation. So you don't go hungry at the Shangri La!
Above all, for me, the service counts and never disappoints. The staff are very very good and pamper you. I have stayed in other hotels in Singapore (Raffles, The Hyatt and even the Orchard Inn once) but I keep coming back to the Shangri La.
