Singapore was once little more than a stopover for many travelers, but now it has come into its own as a booming metropolis that does good business for vacations as well as holidays. This has led to many hotels having to refurbish, expand, and vary their services to accommodate a changing clientele. As in many others cities, boutique hotels with smaller, quirkily designed rooms have become more and more common over the past couple of decades.
Hotel prices in Singapore can rival those in New York or London—a superior double room in a deluxe hotel can run more than S$400 a night, and one with a private bath in a modest hotel may run around S$200 a night. During conventions and in the peak months of December and June through September, rooms are often scarce, and prices rise. Still, there are usually enough discounts and deals that you can avoid having to pay the full published prices.
For truly low rates, concentrate your search in Chinatown and Little India, which have many of Singapore's budget hotels.

Housed inside an azure Peranakan shophouse corner lot, this Japanese-themed budget hotel is in the very center of Joo Chiat. Spread over four stories, the rooms are bright, with warm wood floors and come equipped with perks like mini-fridges, high-speed Wi-Fi, and TVs. Late check-ins and check-outs are free (subject to availability), and booking directly on the hotel's website gets some discount.
This budget hotel at the very center of Joo Chiat's main strip is surrounded by Vietnamese restaurants, offering very adequate rooms for the price tag. The furnishings are functional, and rooms are decorated with Peranakan tile-inspired motifs, but space is limited, and with no windows in some rooms, one won't feel inclined to do much here but sleep.
Though not new, this hotel just minutes from the heart of Little India offers rooms that are tastefully decorated with charming motifs that pay homage to the Chetti, a group of Peranakan Indians. Larger family-sized rooms and suites open out to a courtyard. To unwind, retire to the central courtyard or the whirlpool-tub area, which makes up for the lack of a swimming pool. The in-house eatery, Albert Cafe, serves traditional Asian and Western cuisine, although there are plenty of other places nearby to grab a bite.
It's only 10 minutes from the airport and near many attractions, including a beach, boat rides to other islands, cafés, pubs, shops, golf facilities, and a museum; free shuttle buses are available to the airport and downtown. Rooms are small, with minimalist furnishings and high ceilings to help fend off claustrophobia. Some rooms have bay windows.
This well-run YMCA at the bottom of Orchard Road has a range of room types and suites (including family rooms), plus an impressive gym and a rooftop pool. Air-conditioned rooms have private bathrooms and all the expected amenities, including TVs, kettles, refrigerators, and toiletries. The location is great, just a short walk from Dhoby Ghaut MRT—plus there's fast free Wi-Fi.
